Spyware and anti-virus software may be great tools to protect your computer from attackers, but they can only do their job if you use them and keep them up to date. We ran the updater when we installed the program. Now we need to configure the program to check for updates or to remind us to do so.
This area has also changed in version 1.5. Updated page coming.
First off, set the program to remind you to update it whenever it is opened... In advanced mode click Settings on the left, then Settings a bit lower on the left. On the right side scroll down about half way til you see Web Update and check the first 2 boxes (if you have a broadband connection) or the third box (if you use dial-up).

This will only tell the program to update remind you about updates when you open it unless you have selected the boxes as I have above. Even then you must run the program to get it to update.
There are two methods for actual updates. First, if you selected the first two boxes as I did above, all you need to do is run SpyBot periodically. Second is to open the program and run the "Search for Updates" that appears on the opening screen. If you don't see it, select the SpyBot S&D tab on the left.

You should probably do this once a week as the program suggests. More would be better and safer. If you get lazy about it you can only blame yourself, but if you go more than a month, you're much more likely to get hit with some sort of malware.
The update process is simple. Just run the updater and choose all the updates and install them. The only catch is you may want to use the drop down list pointed out below to choose a server in or near your country.
